5v2 Possession

  • Organisation

    Create a 10x20 Grid. 5 attacking players and 2 defending players.
  • Process

    Attackers in the middle look to retain possession as long as possible. Defenders in the middle must win possession of the ball, not just kick it away. Player who causes the loss of possession becomes the middle player.
  • Tip

    As the exercise progresses, add restrictions: if a player on the possession team uses two touches, the next time he may only use one touch. Challenge - Time team with the ball to see how long possession can be maintained. Body Shape - players must open body shape and be ready to receive and to play the ball on the first touch. Exercise mechanics - Requiring defenders to win possession makes continuous play possible with no pauses to shag cleared balls. Rectangular space shape gives the exercise direction. Support - defenders must work to trap the ball in the corner, so offensive support must appear on both sides of the ball instantly, and supporting players have to open their body shape so as to be able to receive a hard pass to feet and to be able to play a one touch ball. Splitting defenders - player with the ball must look to split the defenders after they are attracted to the ball and start to close down the player with the ball. Intensity - encourage players who choose to increase the intensity of the exercise on their own. Can increase/decrease number of touches and field space to increase or decrease intensity level.
