Through the Gate

  • Organisation

Give players red and yellow bibs and try to have even numbers of each. Create several gates of the same colour around the pitch and a yellow gate in the centre of the pitch. Arrange players into teams of 3, 2 of one colour and the 3rd player in a different colour i.e. 2 yellow & 1 red or 2 reds & 1 yellow. 1 ball per 3 players.
  • Process

Players pass the ball amongst them, but each pass has to be through a different gate to a different player. I.e. player 1 passes through a gate to player 3, player 3 then pass through a different gate to player 2, player 2 then passes through a different gate to player 1 etc etc. PROGRESSION 1: Ball has to be passed to alternate colours through each gate. Players are allowed to string passes together to get the movement necessary to get the right players in the right position to receive the pass through the gate. I.e. Red 1 passes to Red 2 through 1st gate, then Red 2 passes to Yellow 1 through a different gate, then Yellow 1 passes to either Red 1 through a different gate. Red 1 then passes to Red 2 who then passes ball through another gate to Yellow 1. SEE: Video "Progression 1" PROGRESSION 2: Expand groups to be 2 of each colour. Give foursome 2 balls. Pass through the gates to an opposite colour. Can pass to same colour but not through the gate. Each ball has to pass a different gate. Cannot pass back to the player who passed the ball to receiver. SEE: Video "Progression 2" PROGRESSION 3: Make players into 2 teams and remove 1 of the gates. Each team players the ball amongst themselves and have to pass through at least 1 red gate before they can score through the yellow gate. STEP: Can be overloaded and double points given to smaller side for a goal; Remove more gates; Bigger team has to go through red & yellow gate to score whilst smaller team only needs yellow gate to score; Introduce a smaller ball; Introduce 2 balls. SEE: Video "Progression 3"

  • Field size

Arrange pitch area so that it is sufficient for the number of players taking part. Ideally 5yds x 5yds per 2 players.
  • Cone margins

Start with cones 4ft apart. Increase to 5ft to make easier. Decrease to 3ft or 2ft to make harder.
