This week’s focus

Training duels is difficult because of the current coronavirus situation. After all, distancing rules should be observed as far as possible in sport too. Nevertheless, training the attacking and defending 1 vs 1 must not be neglected. Direct duels cannot take place, but the necessary technical skills and individual tactical pointers for the attacking 1 vs 1 can and should still be trained.

Opponents can only be simulated with dummies. But progress can still be made, because players can concentrate fully on carrying out the instructions for the attacking 1 vs 1.

This training week specifically trains feinting for the attacking 1 vs 1. Different feints will be used in 2 sessions. The first session focuses mainly on feints to beat the opponent. The 2nd session uses feints that are better suited to dribbling to keep possession. These serve, for example, to open a passing lane or to buy time until a passing option appears.

Besides performing the feints smoothly and cleanly, attention is also paid to setting up the feints and the change of pace and direction that follows. Especially when dribbling to beat an opponent, make sure that the player picks up speed immediately after receiving the ball and times the feint correctly.

Session 1

4 drills

In football matches, including at higher levels, it is clear to see that the “classic” feints are used almost all the time. More unusual skill moves such as the rainbow flick can be seen now and then, but feints such as the step-over or the lunge have proven to be effective weapons in the attacking 1 vs 1.

Especially when dribbling to beat an opponent, the feints to use are those that can also be performed while dribbling at high speed, or that do not cost much dribbling speed. Because feinting usually becomes an end in itself and ineffective when strings of step-overs or complex feints mean that the player goes into the 1 vs 1 with far too little speed.

This session is about feints for dribbling to beat an opponent. The players are also given some room to try out more complex feints and to be creative themselves. However, the main focus will be on the well-known skill moves such as the lunge, the step-over or the shot feint.

Coaching points for this session
  • Pick up speed
  • Start feints in good time
  • Make sure the feints are performed with a fluid movement
  • Step-over and lunge: shift the centre of gravity sufficiently
  • Shot feints: draw back the kicking leg clearly and visibly
  • After the feint, make a change of pace and direction
Drill 1

Coordinated Feinting

15 min
  • The players dribble towards each other.
  • Just before the halfway line they perform a feint and go past the player opposite.
  • At the other starting line they turn round and repeat the sequence.

Note: Both players run the ball with the same foot and perform the feint to the same side, otherwise there will be a collision in the middle.

Equipment & set-up

Pitch: Cones mark out the playing area and the halfway line.

Equipment: Cones and one ball per player.

Players: Pairs standing opposite each other with a ball.

Coaching points
  • Demand an explosive movement during the feint.
  • Keep the head up in order to coordinate with the partner.
Drill 2

Technique plus Fitness

Half a pitch
  • Player A dribbles at speed towards Player B.
  • From around 15 metres, Player A plays a lofted ball to Player B.
  • Player B takes the ball and dribbles out of the square; Player A takes up a position in the square.
  • Player B dribbles at speed to the next square of choice.
  • From around 15 metres, Player B likewise plays a lofted ball there, and the sequence starts again from the beginning.

Variations: In the younger age groups, replace the lofted ball with a ground pass and adapt the pitch size to the age.

Equipment & set-up

Pitch: Five squares of cones are spread across the pitch.

Equipment: 20 cones and several balls.

Players: At least one player stands in each square.

Coaching points
  • Get the ball down quickly and go into a dribble at speed.
  • Play the lofted ball out of the movement.
  • Demand communication.
  • Establish eye contact before the pass.
Drill 3

4-Cone Zigzag: Dribbling with Feints

20 min

The set route runs in a zigzag from cone to cone. The runs are completed one after the other:

  1. Without a ball for orientation.
  2. Dribbling along the course.
  3. Cutting in front of the cone, alternating with the inside of the left and the right foot.
  4. Cutting in front of the cone, alternating with the outside of the left and the right foot.
  5. Lunge in front of the cone.
  6. Step-over in front of the cone.
  7. Scissors in front of the cone.
  8. Turning in with the inside of the foot in front of the cone.
  9. Turning in with the outside of the foot in front of the cone.
  10. Sole trick in front of the cone.
  11. In front of the cone, dragging the ball behind the standing leg with the sole.
  12. Combination of different techniques as specified by the coach.
Equipment & set-up

Pitch: Four cones form a diamond.

Equipment: 4 cones and several balls.

Players: The players spread out evenly at the cones.

Coaching points
  • Start the feints in good time.
  • Carry out a change of pace with the cut.
  • Cut at as steep an angle as possible.
Drill 4

Shooting Duel

20 min
  • The players perform various tricks and turning techniques in the feint star.
  • If the coach calls out two names or two areas, the players concerned turn towards the goal on their side as quickly as possible.
  • They finish into the specified corner marked with a bib.
  • Whoever hits the correct corner first gets a point.
  • The players then swap feint stars.
Equipment & set-up

Pitch: For each player, six cones form a feint star; at the ends there are two youth goals whose corners are marked with bibs in two colours.

Equipment: 2 youth goals, 6 cones per player, 4 bibs in two colours and one ball per player.

Players: All players work at their own feint star at the same time.

Coaching points
  • Keep the ball close.
  • Finish with both feet.

Session 2

4 drills

Not only when dribbling to beat an opponent, but also when dribbling to keep possession, using feints can give you an advantage. Often it is only a matter of getting a little away from the opponent in order to carry out a follow-up action. Feints when dribbling to keep possession can help the players to open a passing lane, create a chance to finish, turn in front of an opponent, or simply buy time until a team-mate is available for a pass.

In dribbling to beat an opponent, the focus was above all on the step-over, the shot feint and the lunge. In dribbling to keep possession, too, we will concentrate on a few simple but effective skill moves:

  • Scissors: one leg is moved around the ball from the outside to the inside. The move is therefore more or less the counterpart of the step-over. The important thing with the scissors is that the centre of gravity is shifted to the side of the standing foot. This makes the feint look even more convincing, and the opponent is wrong-footed. After the feint, the ball is taken with a change of pace using the outside of the foot that made the feint. Alternatively, a body feint can also be added after the scissors.
  • Pass feint: in a pass feint, the opponent is shown a fake pass. It is important that the movement is almost identical to a “real” pass. The kicking leg is clearly drawn back and the upper body moves as it would for a pass. Just before the foot reaches the ball, the player starts a cutting movement. The cut can be made with the outside of the foot, the inside of the foot or behind the standing leg.
  • Body feints/ lunges: in these feints, the centre of gravity is deliberately shifted to make the opponent expect a dribble in any given direction. Body feints are simple but incredibly effective skill moves. Players with a low centre of gravity in particular can use this feint to great advantage.
Coaching points for this session
  • After the feints, make a change of pace and a sharp change of direction
  • Pass feint: draw back the kicking leg clearly and visibly
  • Body feints/scissors: shift the centre of gravity sufficiently
Drill 1

Receiving and Taking the Ball in the Triangle

20 minAs shown in the graphic
  • Player A passes the ball to Player B, who comes towards the ball.
  • Player B takes the ball in their stride and dribbles to the next starting cone.
  • Player A takes over the position of Player B.
  • After a while the direction of play is changed.

Variations:

  • Take the ball with the inside or with the outside of the foot.
  • Change the direction of the first touch and the dribbling distance.
  • Stop the ball on the left and take it away on the outside or on the inside.
  • Let the ball run through the legs and play it with the heel.
Equipment & set-up

Pitch: Nine cones form three cone triangles in three different colours; three further cones mark the position of the passer.

Equipment: 12 cones and several balls.

Players: Two players with a ball at the starting cones, plus one player behind each of the triangles.

Coaching points
  • Take the ball straight into the movement.
Drill 2

Dribbling and Feints

20 min10 to 15 metres between each of the starting cones
  • All three groups start at the same time.
  • The players dribble towards the pole.
  • They perform a feint.
  • They then cut to the left and dribble to the next group.
Equipment & set-up

Pitch: Three starting cones form a triangle with 10 to 15 metres between each; a pole stands in the middle as a further marker.

Equipment: 3 cones, 1 pole and several balls.

Players: At least two players stand at each starting position.

Coaching points
  • Pay attention to clean execution of the feints.
  • Keep the ball close.
  • Increase the tempo after the feint.

  • Shift the body as well so that the feint works.
Drill 3

Dribbling Course

20 min20 x 15 metres
  • Player A passes to Player B, Player C passes to Player D.
  • Player A then goes through the agility ladder with set step and jump sequences.
  • Player C goes through the course of poles.
  • Players B and D dribble through the slalom course and finish on the mini goals.
  • They then collect the ball from the goal and join the positions next to the goal.
