1 on 1 - Keeping Possession and Overlapping the Opponent

  • Organisation

    • 8 Training Poles
    • 4 Marker Cones
    • Jerseys in 2 different colors
    • 1 ball per player
    • Divide players into 2 teams of 3-6
    • Construct a square pitch with a side length of X meters, where X = number of players x 1,5
    • Mark a dotted line diagonally through the middle of the pitch

     

  • Process

    Each player from Team 1 carries a ball and is assigned to an opponent from Team 2. Once the coach gives a signal, they start into the pitch, creating 4 separate 1 on 1 situations. Team 1 must try to keep possession, while Team 2 tries to win the ball. The players may not interfere with other player-pairs. After about 15-20 seconds, the coach gives a second signal. Whichever player currently has the ball must try to dribble it across the dotted line and through one of the training pole-goals on the other side of the pitch; meanwhile, the other player attempts to gain possession and do the same thing on their side. The exercise is complete, when the ball has gone out, through one of the training pole-goals, or if 45 seconds have passed. Subsequently, the teams switch starting possessions and repeat the exercise. Each ball that is successfully brought through the poles is worth 1 point. The team with the most points wins.

  • Tip

    • Carry the ball with the foot that is furthest away from the opposing player
    • Keep your body between the ball and the opponent
    • When moving with the ball, position your torso sideways to the opponent and use your underarm to block them off. By doing so, you maintain the most distance between the ball and the opponent and are able to monitor their movements
    • Try to stay towards the middle of the pitch rather than being pushed into the corners


    After the signal from the coach:

    • If the opponent keeps some distance: immediately move into an open position
    • If the opponent continues to build pressure: engage in the tackle
    • Abruptly change direction or use a feint to overcome the opposing player and open the pitch for your attack
    • After winning the tackle, cross the opponent’s pathway with pace and quickly dribble the ball through one of the pole-goals
    • Be aware of other 1 on 1 tackles taking place – they might give you an advantage
