1 on 1 - Sidestepping the Opponent

  • Organisation

    • 2 Marker Cones
    • 6-10 Balls
    • 4 Training Poles
    • Set up pole-goals of 6 meter width
    • Jerseys in 2 different colors (3 each)
    • Demarcate a pitch of 20 x 25 meters
    • Divide players into 2 teams of 3 field players and 1 keeper each

     

  • Process

    All players are positioned within the pitch. This exercise is played without applying the offside rule. Team 1 plays on the normal goal, while Team 2 plays on the pole-goals. The coach starts the exercise by passing the ball to Team 1. The exercise now consists of 3 separate 1 on 1 scenarios. It is completed once of the 4 following situations occur: (1) the ball goes out of the pitch; (2) Team 1 scores on the normal goal; (3) Team 2 scores on one of the pole-goals; or (4) 30 seconds have passed. Should (3) be the case and Team 2 manages to score on one of the pole-goals, both teams switch sides and the coach restarts the exercise by passing the ball to Team 2.

  • Tip

    • Use the entire size of the pitch (height & width)
    • Create depth and avoid aligning all players on one line
    • Incorporate a feint even before being passed the ball, in order to allow for a more advantageous 1st touch
    • If the opponent keeps some distance: immediately move into an open position
    • If the opponent continues to build pressure: engage in the tackle
    • Abruptly change direction or use a feint to overcome the opposing player and open the pitch for your attack
    • After winning the tackle, cross the opponent’s pathway with pace and quickly search for a finish
    • Quickly complete the attack with determination and focus
