Passing Exercise: Improving Timing

  • Organisation

    • 16 cones to mark 4 squares
  • Process

At the beginning, the ball is in one square and is passed to the next square. The receiving player is outside the square and runs into the ball to take it with one touch in the new direction of play. Then, the ball is passed to the next square. The exercise continues as a continuous passing drill. Players sprint to the ball after each pass.

If there are more than 8 players, 2 balls can be in play simultaneously. In this case, reduce the speed slightly and ensure that both balls are in play at the same time.

  • Tip

    Coaching Points:

    • Both touches, both the first touch and the pass, are made with the outside foot.
    • Pay attention to the timing of the receiving players. They should take the ball in stride and not come to a stop in the field.
  • Field size

    • 20 x 20 meters (squares 5 x 5 meters)
