Passing Through the Gap

  • Organisation

    • Set up 4 poles as a back four.
    • Place 3 cones to mark positions as per the sketch.
    • Position 2 players at cones A and B. The rest of the team positions themselves at cone C.
  • Process

Player 1 passes the ball to Player 2 and starts running towards the poles. Player 2 passes the ball to Player 3. This player plays the ball (preferably directly) through the gap to the running Player 1, who then finishes on goal. Player 1 retrieves the ball, places it at cone A, and joins the line at cone C becoming Player 3. Player 2 becomes Player 1, and Player 3 becomes Player 2.

  • Tip

    Coaching Points

    • Start running into depth at the highest speed (possibly delay slightly after the first pass is played).
    • Control the ball once and finish.
    • Player 3: Pass the ball with the “farthest foot from the opponent”.
