Playing into Depth with Target Zones

  • Organisation

    • 4 cones to mark target zones
    • 2 goals
  • Process

    • Between the target zones, play 9 vs 9 or 10 vs 10. For the goal attempt, balls can be played into the target zone, after which the forward running striker goes 1 on 1 against the goalkeeper. The defending team must not intervene anymore and only prevent the target ball.

    Variations

    • One defender can move into the target zone
    • For uncontested build-up play, the two center-backs are allowed in their target zone
  • Tip

    • Watch for offside. Especially in exercises involving play into depth, it's useful for a coach to position themselves level with the last defenders. From this position, you can effectively identify offside positions and coach the movement of the forwards.
