1 on 1 - Gaining Possession

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Main point, End
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players

Setup

Requirements:

  • 4 Marker Cones
  • 2 Training Poles
  • Jerseys in 2-4 different colors
  • 2 Goals

Setup:

  • Mark a pitch with the length of two penalty boxes and a width of about 100 feet
  • Arrange the poles about 33 feet apart in the middle of the pitch
  • Divide players into several teams, each consisting of 4 field players and 1 keeper

Procedure

Two teams play against each other within the demarcated pitch. After a goal, or being put out of play, as well as at the beginning of the exercise, the ball starts with the keeper. Each forward movement through the poles and each goal is worth one point. The team with the most points wins. Alternate teams every 3-4 minutes. In case there are only 2 teams available, let them rest for about 60-90 seconds every couple of minutes.

Tip

  • Using the entire size of the pitch binds the opposing players and allows the team in possession to play with an attacking 1 on 1
  • Spread out into the area in front of the dribbling teammate
  • When possible, approach offensive 1 on 1 scenarios in forward movement
  • Closely monitor the opponent’s movement around the pitch
  • Enter 1 on 1 tackles with resolve and increase the tempo
  • Abruptly start a sprint, change direction, or use a feint to overcome the opposing player
  • After winning the tackle, cross the opponent’s pathway with pace and quickly search for a finish. That way, you deny them a second chance of a confrontation
