1 on 1 - Wingers – Short Distance

  • Age U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point, End
  • Number of Players 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

  • 4 Marker Cones
  • 2 Goals
  • 12-16 Balls
  • Jerseys in 2 different colors (7 each)
  • Construct a pitch the size of two penalty areas
  • Divide players into 2 teams of 7 field players and 2 keepers each

Procedure

Per team, 5 field players move around within the designated pitch, while the other 2 move along both sidelines. The players of the team in possession may stand directly on the sidelines, the others 2-3 meters behind them. The keepers pass the balls to a teammate at the start of the exercise, and consequently every time the ball goes out or into the goal. The first players may not pass the ball directly to their teammate on the side, but any player afterwards may. Once player on the sideline receives a pass, they must dribble the ball into play, entering the pitch. At the same time, the passing player leaves the pitch and takes the position on the side. Any goals scored or assisted directly by a player from the sidelines counts for two points.

Tip

The primary purpose of this exercise is to focus on the attacking 1 on 1 battles between the wingers

  • Use the entire size of the pitch (height & width)
  • Do not block the space between a teammate and winger, always give them the opportunity of passing
  • Involve the wingers into play using a forward and attacking momentum
  • Try to create as much space for the wingers as possible
  • Wingers: combine your first touch with a feint to overcome your opponent, if they are close to you
  • Wingers: move along the sidelines always ready to accept a pass
  • Wingers: accept passes into your forward movement and increase tempo
  • Wingers: engage opposing players in a steep tackle
  • Wingers: abruptly change direction or use a feint to overcome the opposing player
  • Wingers: after winning the tackle, cross the opponent’s pathway with pace and quickly search for a finish. That way, you deny them a second chance of a confrontation
  • Wingers: do not lose tempo when feinting. Use simple feints that work well under high velocity, such as stepovers or sidesteps
