1 vs All with a Ball

  • Age U6 - U13
  • Training Set Progression

Setup

Pitch: Mark out a channel about 10 metres wide and 20 metres long, the long sides are marked with red cones. At the halfway point there is a yellow cone on each side.

Equipment: Cones in two colours, 1 ball per player.

Players: One player stands as the catcher at the end of the channel, all the others next to each other on the starting line with the ball at the feet.

Procedure

  • The players with a ball try to reach the end of the channel without the defender taking the ball off them.
  • Anyone who steps over the touchline counts as caught.
  • Once all players have reached the end or have lost their ball, the next round starts.
  • The players without a ball now try to win the remaining balls, while the others want to reach the end.
  • The game ends when there is no ball left in play.

Variations:

  • Use the cones in the middle as an additional rule, for example catching is only allowed in front of or behind them.
  • If a ball stays inside the playing area, the player who lost it may repeat the attempt.
  • Players who have lost the ball play on for their team in the next round and try to keep the ball by passing. Special rule: the ball may only be played backwards.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • The players should start with close ball control and only accelerate once the catcher has committed.
  • Shield the ball with the body as soon as the catcher is close.
  • The catcher should decide on one ball early and play it out of the channel decisively.
