2 vs 2 - Staying with your man, tracking and not handing off

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players

Setup

Four players (blue A and B defenders / red C and D attackers) are positioned on the field as shown in the diagram. The ball is with player D.

Procedure

The exercise starts with a pass from player C to player D, who immediately starts dribbling forward. At the same time, player B leaves his defensive position and pressures player D. A shifts toward B's defensive position. Directly after his pass to D, C overlaps player D. D dribbles diagonally left into a central position. B stays with player D. A crosses behind B and picks up player C. The exercise ends once the players are in the penalty area.

Tip

- Unlike the exercise '2 vs 2 - Tucking in with handoff,' the defenders here follow the attackers' position swap because this exercise takes place in the danger zone, and handing off could briefly create a shooting opportunity for the attacker on the ball. - This is a walkthrough exercise. No tackles take place. It primarily serves to learn the running paths. - The exercise should be trained with as many repetitions as possible (automating the movement pattern). - Precise and powerful passing should be emphasised. - The trigger signal for the defensive reaction is the backswing of the passer. - The lateral distances between players in the starting position are approximately 7-12 m. The player pairs face each other at approximately 15 m distance. - 1 full-size goal(s)
