2 vs. 2 with Two Servers Each on 2 Goals

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 10-15 players

Setup

A playing field with two goals is set up. Each half contains one team of 2 field players, 2 goalkeepers, and two servers. The balls are distributed to the goals.

Procedure

Handball is played in the field with the goal of playing the ball to one of the two line players so they can throw it back to an attacker who finishes with a header. Players in the field may not bounce the ball on the ground and may not take more than four steps with the ball in hand. They can throw the ball to each other. The players behind the goal count as teammates and only play with the attacking team. The goalkeeper may catch aerial balls and can initiate a counter. Defenders may not play the ball from an opponent with the hand; hands are only allowed on the second contact (if a defender wants to intercept a ball from the opponent, he can redirect it to a teammate with his foot and that player may catch it, or he plays it first with his head and then catches it). Field players switch with the servers every 1-2 minutes.

Tip

- Pay attention to off-the-ball movement to create passing options. - If the opposing team is massed in front of your goal, draw them out. - Show the players that this game format trains many skills needed in football. - It is crucial that the throws are accurate (if necessary, with both hands). - The contact surface for the header is the forehead. - Momentum for the header comes from the arched back (bow tension of the upper body). - For diving headers or headers after a jump, push off from the balls of the feet. - In heading duels, ensure fair challenges (no elbows). - Demand physical contact. - Defending players try to either get to the ball before the attacker or position themselves between the attacker and the goal to defend from there. - Demand quick counterattacks. - 4 cones, 2 full-size goal(s)
