2 x 5 vs 2 in four grids

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression

Setup

Set up 4 cone rectangles as shown in the diagram. Two groups of 7 are formed and distributed across 2 adjacent fields. Each group of 7 is split into a team of 5 (red) and a team of 2 (blue).nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn nnnnnnnnnnnnn

Procedure

5 vs 2 is played simultaneously in 2 fields. The players of the red team of 5 pass the ball around with one touch each. The two blue players must try to win possession. If one of the blue players touches the ball, the ball goes out of bounds, or a player uses more than one touch, the blue player who has been in the middle the longest swaps positions with the red player who made the error. If the red team completes 20 consecutive touches, both blue players must stay in the middle for an additional round. The same applies if a red player nutmegs a blue player (playing the ball through their legs). Instruction: On the coach's command, all players must sprint to the next opposite rectangle. The last two/slowest players must go into the middle.

Tip

- Emphasis should be placed on precise and firm passing. - The team in possession must be staggered so that all sides of the field and the centre are covered. - Triangles must be constantly formed to provide passing options. - The passing game alternates between many short passes and occasional long passes to switch the side. - Players continuously try to make themselves available as passing options for their teammates. - The team without possession tries to cleverly close passing lanes and spaces and applies constant pressure on the player in possession and nearby opponents. - The wide players should adopt an open body position (sideline at their back) so they can always see the next passing option. - This game format trains short passing/triangle play and playing in tight spaces. - Quick transition on the coach's command with a sprint to the opposite field. - 16 cones
