3 vs 2 with an Opponent Behind II

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

Pitch: Mark out an area of about 20 x 15 metres with cones; two further cones mark the halfway line on the sides. On the shorter sides there are one mini goal and one dribbling goal made of two flat markers each, with the two mini goals lying diagonally opposite each other.

Equipment: 6 cones, 4 flat markers for the dribbling goals, 2 mini goals, bibs in two colours, balls.

Players: Two teams with 4 and 2 players. From the team of four three players stand with a ball on the goal line and on the two touchlines respectively, the fourth stands in the opposition half. The two players of the team of two stand in their own half.

Procedure

  • The player of the team of four from the opposition half starts the round by running into the team's own half and demanding the pass from one of the team-mates.
  • As soon as this player enters the team's own half, the two defenders may also enter that half and defend actively.
  • The player who has played the pass then waits outside the playing area until the next round begins. In this way the option of a first-time lay-off is ruled out.
  • With the first pass the two remaining players leave their balls where they are and run into the playing area.
  • A 3 vs 2 is created, in which the team with the numerical advantage scores through the dribbling goal or the mini goal.
  • The team of two tries to prevent this and to score in the opposite goals itself.
  • The first pass may only be played once the free player has entered the team's own half.
  • After that the players rotate and a new round starts.

Progression:

  • Limit the number of touches.
  • Set a time limit.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • The player receiving the pass should get their bearings before taking the first touch and check the available options. The team-mates support this by getting free, showing for the ball and communicating clearly.
  • The team of two should win the ball before the team with the numerical advantage has organised itself.
  • To do so, prevent the first pass or take advantage of the first poor first touch.
  • Make the game around the ball as tight as possible in doing so.
  • The team with the numerical advantage should create maximum width and depth and occupy the free spaces with the players without the ball in order to form passing options.
