4 + 2 vs. 4

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players

Setup

Set up a field with four cones as shown in the diagram. Form two teams of 4 and one team of 2. 10 players (4 red, 4 yellow, and 2 blue) enter the playing field.

Procedure

The red team is in possession and plays with the 2 blue players in a numerical advantage against the 4 yellow players without touch restrictions in a keep-away game. If team yellow wins the ball, the two blue players switch to the yellow team and play 6 vs. 4 against the red players. This creates a constant alternation between overload and underload situations. Alternative: - Touch restrictions. - For younger kids, reduce the game form to 3 + 2 vs. 3.

Tip

- Triangles must constantly be formed to provide passing options. - The passing game alternates between many short passes and long passes to switch the zone of play. - The teams should be in constant motion. Players continuously make themselves available as passing options for their teammates. - The team without possession tries to cleverly block passing lanes and spaces and permanently pressures the player on the ball and the players next to him. - The passing options should try to adopt an open body position so they can always see the next passing option. - This game form requires an enormous amount of running and tactical understanding and is characterised by constant communication and zone changes. It also trains short passing, playing in tight spaces, and quick switches of play. - The team in possession should have players positioned on the wings, in the centre, and in the half-spaces. - 4 cones
