4 vs. 4 with Supporting Players

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point

Setup

A playing field with 2 goals is marked out using cones as shown in the diagram. 2 cones mark the centre line. 2 teams (blue and red) of 8 players each are formed. A goalkeeper is in each goal.

Procedure

4 vs. 4 is played with supporting players on the wings and behind the goal. Each team of 4 has 4 additional supporting stations on offence (2 on the wings, 2 behind the goal). The wing players have only one touch; the players in the centre have free play. The objective is to score goals. Goals only count if all players of the scoring team have pushed past the centre line (are in the opponent's half) when the goal is scored. Goals count double if the opposing team is not entirely back defending in their own half at the time of the goal. Variation: Goals also count double if the assist for the goal came from a wing player.

Tip

- This game format demands an enormous amount of running and football IQ and is characterised by constant communication and interplay between both halves. - Teams should be in constant motion. Players try to continuously offer themselves and be available as passing options for their teammates. - Triangles should be regularly formed, and the goalkeeper and wing players should be used as passing options. - This game format trains short passing, playing in tight spaces, tackling, quick switches of play, and counterattacks. - After 2-3 minutes, the teams of 4 should switch since this game is physically very intense. - Forming 4 teams creates a tournament/competitive atmosphere. - 6 cones, 2 full-size goal(s)
