17 players take positions as shown in the diagram on half the field, with a goal on the end line and the centre line. A goalkeeper goes in each goal. The team in possession (Team A) positions one player (A and E) on each wing, one central player (C) in the middle with the ball, and two strikers (B and D). Team B positions itself in a back three on a line 16-20 m from their own goal (8-12 metres apart), and two players stand next to the goal. The 5 players from Team C stand next to the end-line goal. On the sidelines, one cone is placed at the halfway point and in the centre of the field on each side, serving as a centre-line marker.
Procedure
Three teams of 5 are formed. Team A plays with all 5 players against 3 players from Team B. After the attack is finished, or if Team B wins the ball and dribbles it past the centre line, Team B plays with all 5 players (the two players behind the goal join in) against 3 defenders from Team C. Team A takes Team B's defensive position. This continues in constant rotation. The defensive line is a back three; the attackers should play in a 1-2-2 formation when possible. The back three constantly practices the running paths that a back four also needs.
Tip
- The focus of this game format is on quick transition from defence to attack as well as training numerical superiority/inferiority situations. - On offence, constant movement, communication, and fast, precise passing are required. A staggered depth in the 1-2-2 formation must be maintained, avoiding movement on one line (depth staggering means creating passing options). - The defenders always act as a unit and must not get too far apart. - The goal for the defenders is either to win possession or to force the ball carrier into a non-dangerous area to the side and block his passing lane toward goal/to teammates by double-teaming. - The task of the ball-near defender is to press the ball carrier. The other two defenders secure the space behind (defensive triangle). - The players' running paths are forward toward the ball and back, as well as shifting left and right. - Through passes into the depth to the strikers force the defensive line into forward movement. Continuing to switch the ball forces the defensive line to shift forward and sideways. This creates spaces in depth for the attacking team, as well as the opportunity to play a diagonal ball to the open side. - The players in the back must not push too close to the front players and should maintain 20-25 metres distance to the attackers so they always have the play in front of them and can run onto balls to quickly play them on with one touch. - 3 cones, 1 full-size goal(s)
