5 vs 4 + Goalkeeper

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point

Setup

17 players take their positions according to the diagram on the half field, and a goal is placed on each sideline. Each goal has a goalkeeper. The ball-possessing blue team positions one player each on the right and left flanks, one central player with the ball near the midfield line, and two forwards. The yellow-red team positions itself 16-20 m in front of their own goal in a back four on a line (8-12 metres spacing between each), and one player stands on the sideline. The 5 players from the red-white team are positioned identically to the yellow-red team on the opposite half. On the sidelines at centre height, cones are placed 3 metres apart to serve as a neutral zone where the neutral target player moves.

Procedure

Three 5-player teams are formed. The blue team plays with all 5 players against 4 players from the yellow-red team. After completing the attack or when the outnumbered team, after winning the ball, dribbles it into the neutral zone or passes to the target player, blue's attacking attempt is over. Then the yellow-red team immediately starts their attack with all 5 players (i.e., the outside player joins in) against the 4 defenders from the red-white team. The blue team takes the defensive position of team yellow-red. This continues in constant rotation. The defensive line is a back four; the attackers should, if possible, play in a 1-2-2 formation. The back four constantly practices the movement patterns required of a back four.

Tip

- The focus of this game format is on practising the movement patterns of the back four and midfield line with the follow-up actions of 'quick transition from defence to attack' and ball control after winning the ball. Additionally, the attacking team practices playing out numerical advantage situations, with the emphasis on pressing immediately after losing the ball. - The movement patterns of the players in the back four are toward the ball, forward and back, or tucking in to the left and right. Players often tuck in while moving forward. However, depth staggering should be created. Therefore, the player must tuck in while running sideways and backward. - The goal for the defenders is to either win possession or push the ball carrier into the non-dangerous area toward the side and block his passing lane to the goal/to his teammate by tucking in. - On offence, constant movement and quick, precise passing is required. According to the 1-2-2 formation, depth staggering of the players must be ensured, and consequently movement on a flat line must be avoided (depth staggering means creating passing options). The wide players should use the full width of the field and be positioned at the sideline. - If the attack goes through the wide player, he has the option to dribble, cross, or pass the ball on. - Through passes into depth (to the forwards), the defensive line is forced into forward movement. By switching the ball to the flanks, the defensive line is forced to shift forward and to the side. This results in the attacking team gaining space in depth, as well as the opportunity to switch play diagonally to the open side. - If the back four has pushed up too far or has large gaps between players, the through ball should be played. - The passer in the back should not push up too close to the players in front and should always maintain 20-30 metres distance from the forwards, so he permanently has the play in front of him and can 'run onto' balls to quickly relay them with one touch. - 4 cones, 2 full-size goal(s)
