6 vs 5 + 1

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 10-15 players

Setup

A field is set up with six cones as shown in the diagram. The red marker cones divide the field into two equally sized halves. Two teams of 6 are formed. 11 players (6 red and 5 blue) go into one half. The remaining blue player stands in the other half.

Procedure

The red team is in possession and plays against the 5 blue players without touch restrictions on ball retention. If team blue wins the ball, they must pass to their blue teammate in the other half and can then play 6 vs 5 on their side. Consequently, one red player must stay on the other side. This creates a constant interplay of numerical advantages and disadvantages. Alternative: Limit the number of touches.

Tip

- Triangles must be constantly formed to provide passing options. - The passing game alternates between many short passes and long passes to shift the zone of play. - The teams should be in constant motion. Players continuously try to make themselves available as passing options for their teammates. - The team without possession tries to cleverly close passing lanes and spaces and applies constant pressure on the player in possession and nearby opponents. - Passing targets should try to adopt an open body position so they can always see the next passing option. - This game format requires an enormous amount of running and tactical understanding and is characterised by constant communication and zone changes. Additionally, it trains short passing, playing in tight spaces, and quick switches of play. - The team in possession should have players covering the flanks, the centre, and the half-spaces. - 6 cones
