7 + 2 vs. 7 with Wing Goals

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point

Setup

Use 6 cones to mark out a field (including the halfway line). On each side of the field, set up a lateral zone with 3 additional cones each. On both end lines, set up a goal. Two teams of 9 are formed; each goal has a goalkeeper.

Procedure

7 players from each team play 7 vs. 7 inside the cone field. The objective for both teams is to score goals. Every attack is opened through the goalkeepers, who always play the ball to any wide player on their team! The wide players may not be attacked by the opposing team (not even by the opposing wide players). The wide strikers may not leave their zone (goal line to halfway line) and should continuously deliver crosses or flat passes into the box after receiving the ball from the goalkeeper. Variant: - The wide players have 2 or 3 touches. - After the ball is played into their zone, the wide players may be attacked by the same-side opposing wide player.

Tip

- The defenders try to close down spaces and block passing lanes during the build-up. - Once the wide player has the ball, each defender marks an attacker. - After winning the ball, the defender or goalkeeper immediately initiates a counterattack through the wide players. - Both teams should be in constant motion. Players continuously try to make themselves available as passing options for their teammates. - At least two players from the team in possession make crossing runs toward the near and far posts; a third player drops into the back space. This gives the crosser various passing options. - This game form requires an enormous amount of running and tactical understanding and is characterised by constant communication and an alternation between attacking and defending. - 12 cones, 2 full-size goal(s)
