8 vs 8 + 2 attackers/defenders with goalkeepers on the full field

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point

Setup

A goal is set up on each goal line. Two teams of 10 are formed. Each goal has a goalkeeper.

Procedure

The game is played 10 vs 10, with a maximum of 16 players allowed in one half at a time. Depending on how quickly the teams transition from attack to defence (and vice versa), constant numerical advantages and disadvantages arise, which should be exploited by quickly attempting to finish on goal. When numbers are even (8 vs 8), the attacking play should be set up so that the ball circulates through the team's own ranks until a gap opens in the defensive block. After 8 touches within their own ranks, the ball may be played long and fast to the strikers. The two strikers may finish immediately or hold the ball until teammates push up and potentially create a numerical advantage. Alternative - Quick counter-attack: When a team wins possession, a long ball may immediately be played to the strikers in the other half. If this immediate pass option is not taken, the game continues as described above.

Tip

- The focus of this game format is on ball control with the option of 'quick transition from defence to attack.' Additionally, this game format trains off-the-ball movement and pressing of the team in possession. - The teams should be in constant motion. Players continuously try to make themselves available as passing options for their teammates. - Getting locked into a tight space should be avoided. Therefore, switching the point of attack and through balls should be played regularly. - This game format requires an enormous amount of running and tactical understanding and is characterised by constant communication and interplay between both halves. - 2 full-size goal(s)
