8 vs 8 + goalkeepers in one half on 2 full-size goals
AgeU6 - U13, U14 - U19
Training SetMain point
Setup
In one half of the field, a midfield line and a goal-line boundary are marked with cones. A goal is set up on the goal line and on the midfield line. Two teams of 8 are formed. Each goal has a goalkeeper.
Procedure
The two teams play against each other. The game is played with offside and unlimited touches. The objective of the team in possession is to finish on goal. The other team tries to disrupt the build-up early through high pressing and, when possible, win possession in dangerous areas to finish on goal.
Tip
- The focus of this game format is on practising pressing movement patterns with the follow-up actions of 'quick transition from defence to attack' and ball control after winning possession. Additionally, the team in possession practices off-the-ball movement with the goal of scoring. - The objective for defenders is either to win possession or to force the attacker with the ball into a non-dangerous area toward the side, blocking the passing lane to the goal or to a teammate through double-teaming or tucking in. The midfielder tries to double-team or close the passing lane. - On offence, constant movement and quick, precise passing are required. A 2-4-2 formation (variable 4-3-1 etc.) should ensure depth in the positioning of players, avoiding movement on the same line (depth means creating passing options). The wide players should use the full width of the field and position themselves on the sideline. - When the attack is carried through the wide players, players from the half-spaces try to make overlapping runs or act as passing targets and crossing options from deep. The wide player has the option to dribble, cross, or pass the ball on. - Through balls to the strikers push the defensive line into a forward movement. Switching play to the flanks forces the defensive line to shift forward and sideways. This gives the attacking team space in behind and the opportunity to play a diagonal ball to the open side. - Triangles must be constantly formed to provide passing options. - The teams should be in constant motion. Players continuously try to make themselves available as passing options for their teammates. - Getting locked into a tight space should be avoided. Therefore, switching the point of attack and through balls should be played regularly. - This game format requires an enormous amount of running and tactical understanding and is characterised by constant communication and interplay between both halves. - 5 cones, 2 full-size goal(s)
