8 vs 8 in three zones

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point

Setup

Set up a field with two end zones marked by cones at the top and bottom of the field. Two teams of 8 are formed.

Procedure

In the playing field (centre rectangle), 8 vs 8 is played with a maximum of 2 touches. Teams can score a point by passing to a teammate in one of the two end zones. In the end zones, the number of touches is unlimited. After scoring a point, the same team can only score the next point by passing into the opposite end zone. Variation: Points can only be scored if the player receiving in the end zone can directly pass to a second teammate in the same end zone.

Tip

- Triangles must be constantly formed to provide passing options. - The passing game alternates between many short passes and long passes to shift the zones of play. - The teams should be in constant motion. Players continuously try to make themselves available as passing options for their teammates. - The team without possession tries to cleverly close passing lanes and spaces and applies constant pressure on the player in possession and nearby opponents. - Getting locked into a tight space should be avoided. Therefore, switching the point of attack and through balls should be played regularly. - This game format requires an enormous amount of running and tactical understanding and is characterised by constant communication. Additionally, it trains short passing, playing in tight spaces, and quick switches of play. - The team in possession should have players covering the flanks, the centre, and the half-spaces. - Players must constantly shake off defenders and move into the end zone. - 8 cones
