8 vs 8 in two quarters of the half

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point

Setup

A field corresponding to a quarter of a full field is marked out with six cones. Two teams of 8 are formed and split evenly (4 players per team) across the two rectangles to play against each other.

Procedure

Both teams play against each other with the objective of keeping possession. The team in possession should use wide and deep passing to prevent the other team from winning the ball. The defending team must try to win the ball through aggressive tackling and organised pressing. A constant 4 vs 4 interplay develops in the rectangles, as the team in possession always tries to transfer the ball to the second quarter. Different difficulty levels: - Free play - 2 touches - 1 touchn

Tip

- Triangles must be constantly formed to provide passing options. - The passing game alternates between many short passes and long passes to shift the zone of play. - The teams should be in constant motion. Players continuously try to make themselves available as passing options for their teammates. - The team without possession tries to cleverly close passing lanes and spaces and applies constant pressure on the player in possession and nearby opponents. - The team expecting the ball must create space and signal to the team in possession by calling out that they are available. - Getting locked into a tight space should be avoided. Therefore, switching the point of attack and through balls should be played regularly. - Passing targets should adopt an open body position (sideline at their back) so they can always see the next passing option. - This game format requires an enormous amount of running and tactical understanding and is characterised by constant communication and interplay between both rectangles. - This game format trains short passing, playing in tight spaces, and quick switches of play. - 6 cones
