8 vs 8 + wing players with wing goals

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Main point

Setup

A field is marked out with cones as shown in the diagram. A goal is placed on one end, and 2 cone goals are set up on the other. Two teams of 10 are formed; there is a goalkeeper in the goal. The midfield line is also marked with cones.

Procedure

8 players from each team play against each other 8 vs 8 in the cone field. Red starts by attacking the full-size goal, blue attacks the two cone goals. The objective for both teams is to score goals. Both teams have an additional wing player on each side outside the field. The wing players may be played to by the team in possession during an attack but may not be pressured by the opposing team (including their wing players). The wing players may not leave their zone (end line to midfield line) and should support their team's attack with as many crosses or low balls into the box as possible. At halftime, sides are switched and team red attacks the cone goals while blue attacks the full-size goal. Variation: - The wing players are limited to 2 or 3 touches - After the ball is played into their zone, the wing players may be pressured by the opposing wing player on the same side. - The offside rule applies.

Tip

- The focus of this game format is on wing play and on practising pressing movement patterns with the follow-up actions of 'quick transition from defence to attack' after winning the ball. Additionally, the team in possession practices creating space with the goal of scoring through the wing players. - The goal for the defenders is to either win possession or force the player on the ball into a non-threatening area toward the sideline and block the passing lane to the goal/to a teammate through doubling up or tucking in. The midfielder tries to double up or block the passing lane. - The defenders try to close down spaces and block passing lanes during the build-up. - When the wing player has the ball, each defender marks an attacker. - After winning the ball, the defender or goalkeeper immediately initiates the counterattack through the wing players. - The teams should be in constant motion. Players constantly try to make themselves available as passing options for their teammates. - At least two players from the team in possession cross and move toward the near and far post, while one player drops into the space behind. The other players also try to make themselves available. This gives the crosser various options. - This game format requires an enormous amount of running and tactical understanding, characterised by constant communication and a constant interplay between attack and defence. - Not all players should rush into the box, as the defence must also be organised for the counterattack. - 6 cones, 2 full-size goal(s)
