Attacking / Offside Variations I

Setup

Two teams are formed: a 10-player team (red) and a 5-player team (blue). A goalkeeper is in each goal.

Procedure

The 10-player team plays in a 4-4-2 formation against the 5-player team, which lines up in a 4-1 formation. Initially, the following attack patterns are rehearsed. Team red has the ball, team blue plays passively (only running paths are executed, no challenges). Attack pattern 1: Player C plays a diagonal ball behind the back four into the run of A, who runs toward the goal and either shoots himself or lays the ball off to a teammate. Attack pattern 2: Player B runs at the opposing goal in a speed dribble. The running paths of his teammates I, J, G, and F are designed so that they a) pull defenders away from the centre or b) are positioned as one-two options for B to break through the back four. Attack pattern 3: Player C passes to G, who plays a one-two with J and then dribbles toward the goal looking to finish. Once the running and passing paths have been rehearsed, team blue is allowed to play fully active (with challenges and shots on goal). The basic objective of both teams is to score goals and prevent the other team from scoring.

Tip

- The blue defending team always pushes up toward the player in possession when play is built up, plays for offside, and puts pressure on the ball carrier. - The strikers I + J make checking runs and offer players B, C, or G a passing option. - The wide midfielders E + H move toward the halfway line to avoid being in the offside zone and are overlapped by the outside backs A + D. - Make sure the rehearsed movement patterns lead to a fast, fluid overall movement. - Constantly demand accuracy and tempo (slow execution will not lead to match-realistic success in the long run). - The diagonal balls should be played with the inside of the foot and require pace and precision. - 2 full-size goal(s)
