Back four - Left sided central defender safeguarding after a deep pass through the point where the players meet

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players

Setup

The four defenders A, B, C and D position themselves in the back four basic formation (aligned). The ball is with player E.

Procedure

When completing the drill: Player E plays a deep pass from the left hand side of attack through the gap between the right-back A and the right sided central defender B. Now the closest placed central defender C must run for the ball. When C has the ball under control, he goes back to his position and the exercise starts anew.

Tip

1 full-court goal(s), - This exercise is a dry run. There is no tackling. Its primary function is the learning of paths in soccer.\n- The exercise should be repeatedly trained as many times as possible (automation of movement sequences).\n- The focus lies solely on the path of the left sided central defender. He should be aware that in a similar situation during a game he must run this path without much time to react, as the players A and B can only react initially after some delay (as they have still got to turn around).\n- In the basic formation the lateral distances between the players is 7-12 meters.\n- C starts as soon as the ball is played from E and is foreseeable that it will go through the gap between the players.
