The four blue defenders A, B, C, and D line up in the basic formation of the back four (in a line). The ball is with player E. Positions can easily be filled with multiple players.
Procedure
Player E starts dribbling toward right centre-back B. B steps out of the line and pressures E. At the same time, C and A tuck in laterally, covering player B from behind. D shifts right to the level of the far post. Once player C has engaged player E and the distances are correct, the players return to their starting positions and the exercise starts again.
Tip
- This is a walkthrough exercise. No tackles take place. It primarily serves to learn the running paths. - The exercise should be trained with as many repetitions as possible (automating the movement patterns). - The lateral distances between players are approximately 7-12 metres. - The depth distance in the defensive unit in the end position (from B to A, C, and D) is approximately 8-10 metres. - The tucking in of left centre-back C and right back A behind player B creates the defensive triangle. - The trigger signal for initiating the running paths is the backswing of the passer. - 1 full-size goal(s)
