Back four - Shift to the left

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players

Setup

The four defenders A, B, C and D move out of the basic back four formation (aligned) into the final position shown in the diagram, which resembles a crescent. The ball is with player E. Positions can be multi-occupied without problems.

Procedure

When completing the drill: Player E passes the ball right in the direction of the left-back/direction of the touchline. At the moment where the player moves to strike the ball the left-back D runs forward in the direction of the ball and stops it. At the same time the other defenders move as follows. Player C also marches out forwards and safeguards D. Player B moves parallel to the edge of the penalty box to the left, until he's approximately level with the first post whilst player A moves until he's level with the second post, approximately level with player B or 1 to 2 meters in front. When the players have taken up their final positions and the distances among themselves is correct, the players go back to their starting positions and the exercise starts anew.

Tip

1 full-court goal(s), - This exercise is a dry run. No tackling takes place. Its main function is the learning of paths in soccer.\n- The exercise should be repeatedly trained as many times as possible (automation of movement sequences).\n- The lateral distances between the players are 7-12 meters.\n- The distances in depth in the final position between D, C and B amounts to approximately 8-10 meters in each case.\n- The final position is crescent-shaped.\n- The starting signal for initiating the paths is the passer of the ball moving to strike the ball.\n- The wing-back D runs at the highest tempo to the ball and attempts to reach it at the earliest possible moment.\n
