Back four - Shifting left

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players

Setup

The four blue defenders A, B, C, and D move from the basic formation of the back four (in a line) to the end position shown in the diagram, which resembles a crescent shape. The ball is with player E. Positions can easily be filled with multiple players.

Procedure

Player E passes the ball to the right toward the left outside defender / toward the sideline. At the moment of the backswing, the left back D runs forward toward the ball and stops it. At the same time, the other defenders shift as follows: Player C also steps out and covers D. Player B shifts parallel to the penalty area line to the left, approximately to the level of the near post, and player A to the level of the far post, approximately at the same height as B or 1 to 2 m ahead. Once the players have reached their end positions and the distances are correct, the players return to their starting positions and the exercise starts again.

Tip

- This is a walkthrough exercise. No tackles take place. It primarily serves to learn the running paths. - The exercise should be trained with as many repetitions as possible (automating the movement patterns). - The lateral distances between players are approximately 7-12 metres. - The depth distance in the end position between D, C, and B is approximately 8-10 metres each. - The end position is slightly crescent-shaped - The trigger signal for initiating the running paths is the backswing of the passer. - Fullback D runs at maximum speed toward the ball and tries to reach it as early as possible. - 1 full-size goal(s)
