Back four - Shifting right with man-marking in the centre

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players

Setup

The four blue defenders A, B, C, and D move from the basic formation of the back four (in a line) to the end position as shown in this diagram. The two red attackers G and H act as strikers, E and F as wide midfielders. The ball is with player E.

Procedure

The ball is played from player E to the left attacking side to player F. The defender responsible for this area, A, steps out of the basic formation and pressures F. Since the strikers are in the danger zone near the centre-backs and there is the threat of an immediate cross from F, the centre-backs mark the two strikers and only drop slightly deeper. Player D tucks in to the level of the far post, approximately at the same height as player C. Player F now controls the ball and tries to immediately deliver a cross into the penalty area. The two strikers try to finish, and player E makes a diagonal run into the penalty area where he is picked up by D, also trying to get on the end of the ball.

Tip

- The defensive line stands in the basic formation approximately 22-23 metres from goal, and the lateral distances between defenders are approximately 7-12 metres. - The trigger signal for initiating the running paths is the backswing of the passer. - Fullback A runs at maximum speed toward player F and tries to pressure him as early as possible. At the same time, the other defenders drop 5-6 metres deeper. - The diagonal cross from E should be played as a driven inside-of-the-foot pass (linear rising trajectory with high speed). - E sprints diagonally toward the penalty area immediately after his pass. - The cross should come immediately after F controls the ball. - The strikers can cross runs. - 1 full-size goal(s)
