The three blue defenders A, B, and C move from the basic formation of the back three (in a line) to the end position shown in the diagram (triangle formation). The ball is with player D.
Procedure
Player D passes the ball centrally to player B. The centre-back B then steps out toward the ball. At the same time, players A and C tuck in and thus cover player B. Once this end position is reached and the distances are correct, the players return to the basic formation and the sequence starts again.
Tip
- This is a walkthrough exercise without tackles. It serves exclusively to practise the running paths. - In the basic formation, the players stand in a line. The lateral distances between players are 7-12 metres. When the centre-back steps out and the two outside defenders tuck in with depth offset, the depth distances between the centre-back and outside defenders are approximately 8-10 metres. The distance between the two outside defenders is approximately 7 metres. - Centre-back B runs at maximum speed toward the ball and tries to reach it as early as possible. - The exercise should be trained with as many repetitions as possible (automating the movement pattern). - The trigger signal for initiating the running paths is the backswing of the passer.
