Backward/Forward Roll with Ball

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players

Setup

The goalkeeper coach and goalkeeper position themselves on the field as shown in the graphic. The goalkeeper sits 12-16 metres in front of the goalkeeper coach, who holds a ball in his hand.

Procedure

The goalkeeper performs a backward roll from a seated position, stands up, and catches the ball thrown by the coach or fellow goalkeeper. He then takes a lunge step forward, throws the ball back, takes a step back, and performs a forward roll into the starting position. Sequence of movements: 1 - Backward roll 2 - Ball throw by coach 3 - Catch the ball 4 - Throw the ball back 5 - Forward rolln

Tip

- The player sits on the ground with bent legs/arms, supported on the palms. - He can also start slightly from a squat, builds momentum, and rolls backward over the back/head. The hands/arms serve as levers. - He lands on his legs and gets into an upright position. - The forward roll is performed from a standing squat with a mini dive forward and subsequent rolling over the back/glutes. - When catching, the goalkeeper can choose whether to receive the ball with both arms extended to the chest or catch it at the highest point by pushing off on the right leg (alternating left) with both palms. - For the sidearm throw, the arm is extended backward like a javelin thrower and the ball is placed on the open palm. The extended arm is then brought forward under tension, passing close to the ear. Important here is the bracing step. When the goalkeeper throws with the right, the left leg is positioned forward to the side. When throwing with the left, the right leg is positioned forward to the side. The throwing technique can be practised against a catch fence and later incorporated into shooting drills, where after a saved ball, it must be thrown into a goal set up at any distance.
