Base Formation 4-4-2 - Pairing

  • Age U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Progression, Main point

Setup

- 10 field players and 1 goalkeeper are positioned on the field as shown in the diagram.
- Each player/position is assigned a letter.
- Positions can easily be double/multi-staffed.

Procedure

- Players are positioned in a 4-4-2 and divided into pairs.
- The distances in width are 7-12 metres (e.g., between B and C) and in depth 10-15 metres (e.g., between B and F).
- The players outlined with a rectangle form a pair and are responsible for covering each other during the game.

Tip

- This is a purely static exercise.
- Players should get a feel for the respective positions relative to each other on the field.
- Before the training session, the coach should explain to the players (ideally at a tactics board) the meaning of the formation and the respective positions, and prepare them for what to expect on the training field.
- This verbal-theoretical introduction is followed by the on-field implementation, which serves to visualise and statically execute what was discussed in the locker room.
