Breaking Away from the Opponent with a Preliminary Movement

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players

Setup

  • 4 cones
  • 1 goal

Procedure

  • The midfielder dribbles through the two cones. Upon reaching the second cone, a pass is made to their teammate. The attacker must time their run to get free. The attacker makes a deceptive run deep, then comes short, receiving the pass in an open stance. Following this, the attacker takes a shot.

Variation

  • Add a defender who is allowed to counter upon intercepting the ball over the dashed line between the cones.
  • A chasing defensive player applies pressure (from the side or behind) on the passer.
  • Add a second attacker and defender. The attackers must now coordinate their runs.

Tip

Coaching Points

  • The pass and the preliminary movement must be perfectly synchronized.
  • Encourage executing the drill with both feet.
