Build-Up Play Through the Back Four - Passing Form 5

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players

Setup

At the edge of the penalty area, 4 defenders are positioned side by side at 12-17 m intervals. On the left sideline is the LB, next to him the LCB, then the RCB, and on the right the RB. At the centre line, 4 midfielders are positioned opposite them as follows: Opposite the LB is the LM, opposite the LCB the LC, opposite the RCB the RC, and opposite the RB the RM. The players face each other. To get a feel for the different positions, the two centre-back positions can alternatively be taken by the goalkeepers, and the two half-space midfield positions by the two strikers. The following player positions exist in this system: GK - Goalkeeper LB - Left back LCB - Left centre back RCB - Right centre back RB - Right back LM - Left mid LC - Left-central mid RC - Right-central mid RM - Right mid LS - Left striker RS - Right striker

Procedure

The build-up play is practised with a focus on through passes using various passing lanes. The build-up starts from the left centre back. Direct one-touch passing is practised. The following passing sequence takes place: 1 - LCB passes diagonally to RC 2 - RC passes diagonally to RB 3 - RB passes down the line to RM 4 - RM passes diagonally to RCB 5 - RCB passes diagonally to LC 6 - LC passes diagonally to LB 7 - LB passes down the line to LM 8 - LM passes diagonally to LCBn This passing variation serves as build-up play and can be trained as an endless loop. However, the starting side should regularly be switched, i.e., also start the passing sequence from the RCB. Alternative: - Depending on the skill level, the passing can also be done with two touches. The ball is received with the first touch and played on with the second. - As a spatial reference for the players, their positions can be marked with a cone.

Tip

- Due to the demands of this passing form, the players must be highly focused. - Passes should be played with the inside of the foot or as inside-of-the-foot drives. - Demand precision, sharpness, and accuracy. - Start slowly and then increase speed. - The player expecting the pass simultaneously goes into a short counter-movement as the passer winds up, or runs toward the passer and plays the ball directly on (with 1 touch) in forward motion. - The pass should be played into the running path of the expecting player. - The passer must observe the running path of the expecting player. - The receiver's preparatory movement occurs with the passer's backswing. - Through the receiver's preparatory movement (one step back, then coming 2-4 m toward the pass), the distance between the two passing players is briefly reduced by about 4-8 m, since the passer has also come forward expecting the ball. - 8 cones
