Build-up Play with a Back Four

Setup

  • 3/4 of the field
  • 2 goals
  • 3 small goals in the middle
  • Divide 8 players into a team against 7 players

Procedure

The team in build-up play tries to play one of the two forwards through the 3 passing gates. If successful, the passer should join the attack zone for a 3v2 situation. The defending team tries to disrupt the build-up play. If they win the ball, they can quickly counterattack. The exercise always starts with the goalkeeper of the yellow team.

Tip

Coaching Points:

  • Play passes into space with enough pace
  • After playing the ball into space, move forward with speed
  • Move the ball quickly (sharp passing and playing with 2 touches)
  • Escape from the opponents' cover shadows
  • Make the field wide and deep
