Building out of the back with a back four - Passing pattern 11
AgeU6 - U13, U14 - U19
Training SetProgression, Main point
Number of Players6 - 9 players, 10-15 players
Setup
At the level of the penalty area line, 4 defenders are positioned side by side at a distance of 12-17 m. On the left at the sideline stands the LB, to his right the LCB, then the RCB, and on the right side the RB. At the level of the midfield line, 4 midfielders are positioned facing them as follows: Opposite the LB is the LM, opposite the LCB is the LCM, opposite the RCB is the RCM, and opposite the RB is the RM. The players face each other. To get a feel for the different positions, the two centre-back positions can alternatively be filled by the goalkeepers, and the two half positions in midfield by the two strikers. The following player positions exist in this system: GK - Goalkeeper LB - Left back LCB - Left centre-back RCB - Right centre-back RB - Right back LM - Left midfielder LCM - Left centre-midfielder RCM - Right centre-midfielder RM - Right midfielder LST - Left striker RST - Right striker
Procedure
The build-up play is practised with a focus on switching the point of attack through several short diagonal passes followed by a long square ball to switch sides. The build-up starts from the left back. Direct one-touch passing is practised. The following passing sequence takes place: 1 - LB passes diagonally to LCM 2 - LCM passes diagonally to RCB 3 - RCB passes diagonally to RM 4 - RM plays a long square pass across the entire half to LM 5 - LM passes down the line to LB This passing pattern serves as a build-up play and can be trained as a continuous loop. However, the side from which the build-up starts should be alternated regularly, i.e., the passing sequence should also start from the RB. In that case, the LCB and RCM are involved. Alternative: - Depending on skill level, the passing can also be done with two touches. The ball is received with the first touch and played on with the second.
Tip
- Due to the demands of this passing pattern, players must be highly focused. - Passes should be played with the inside of the foot or as a driven inside-of-the-foot pass. - Demand precision, sharpness, and accuracy. - Start slowly and then increase the pace. - The player expecting the pass makes a short counter-movement at the same time as the passer's backswing, or runs toward the passer and plays the ball directly forward (with 1 touch). - The pass should be played into the path of the player expecting the ball. - The passer must observe the run of the receiving player. - The check-away movement of the receiver coincides with the backswing of the passer. - Through the counter-movement of the receiver (one step back, then coming 2-4 m toward the pass), the distance between the two players is briefly reduced by approximately 4-8 m, since the passer had also moved toward the ball in anticipation. - 8 cones
