Building Up Play Through the Back Three

  • Age U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 10-15 players

Setup

Pitch: Half a pitch without any further markings.

Equipment: Several balls; dummies if desired.

Players: The players are organised in a 3-5-2 formation.

Procedure

  • The players first circulate the ball on their own in the 3-5-2 formation.
  • Step by step the drill is supplemented with set solutions.

Variations:

  • The holding midfielders position themselves wide so that the centre opens up. The centre-back plays the ball to the number ten, who lays it off to the holding midfielder.
  • The striker comes towards the ball slightly and lays it off to the near-side holding midfielder; the full-back runs forward.
  • Add dummies to the drill to represent an opponent with two strikers.

Tip

  • In the second variation the holding midfielders position themselves more centrally rather than in the half-space, so as not to block the passing lane from the centre-back to the striker.
  • Play the forward pass with enough pace.
