Catching a Ball from a Kneeling Position

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players

Setup

The goalkeeper kneels sideways, facing the goalkeeper coach (GC) standing 5-8 metres in front of him. The balls are with the GC.

Procedure

The goalkeeper kneels on the ground with bent arms. When the goalkeeper coach goes into the wind-up motion for the throw, the goalkeeper stands up as quickly as possible and dives after the incoming ball. After catching the ball, he throws it back to the coach and the same round is performed in the other direction.

Tip

- While the goalkeeper kneels, the upper body is in an upright position. - If the ball comes to his left side, he first stands up with the right leg and then pushes off with the left. - In the jump/flight, the goalkeeper tries to make himself as "long" as possible. - The goalkeeper keeps his eyes on the ball at all times. - The ball should be held with both hands. If this is not possible, the ball should be deflected to the side (with the flat hand if the ball is just barely reachable, with the fist if it is not played quite as far to the side). This can be executed with the hand farthest from the ground (reaching over), or with the hand closest to the ground. This variation has the advantage of greater reach.
