Change of Zones

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

Pitch: Mark out a square of about 10 x 10 metres with four cones at the corners. One further cone each on the left and on the right side marks the halfway line that divides the area into two halves. In the middle of each half there is additionally a disc or a flat marker. Each half is divided into four zones by its two diagonals, so that 8 zones are created in total.

Equipment: 6 cones, 2 discs, bibs, balls.

Players: Two teams of equal size. With an odd number of players, one neutral player is nominated who plays exclusively for the team in possession.

Procedure

  • The two teams play for keeping possession across the whole area.

Scoring: Every successful pass into another zone earns the team one point. The teams count their points out loud each time the ball is won. A target score can be set, and when it is reached the other team is given an extra task.

Progression:

  • At a higher level limit the number of touches.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • The free players should continually change zones in order to create passing options.
  • The defending side should above all occupy the surrounding zones in order to narrow the playing area.
  • Only allow ground passes.
