Changing Squares

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

Pitch: Lay out an even grid of at least 5 by 5 squares with flat marker discs or flat markers.

Equipment: Marker discs or flat markers for the grid, 1 ball per team, bibs in two colours.

Players: Two teams, which spread out across the grid mixed in together. Each team has its own ball.

Procedure

  • The players play exclusively within their own team, not against each other.
  • Each player occupies one square; no square may be occupied twice.
  • The players pass the ball to one another.
  • After every pass the passer has to change square.
  • A player may not receive the ball in the square that was occupied when the ball was passed away, but has to receive it in an adjacent square.
  • After the first touch the player dribbles with the ball into an adjoining square and then passes it on to a team-mate.
  • The squares may also be changed at any time without any action on the ball.
  • The aim is for all players to keep moving constantly, to look for free spaces and to prevent a square from being occupied twice by communicating.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • If two players are in one square at the same time, an extra task can be set for both teams, for example 5 press-ups.
  • Encourage the players to support each other loudly.
  • Demand quick changes of square, quick actions and firm passes.
  • Allow ground passes only.
