Setup
Training exercise without opponents. The players of the defending blue team are arranged on the field according to their position in the 4-4-2 system, based on zonal defending at set pieces. Positions can be filled with multiple players. The left back A covers the zone at the near post. The remaining players of the back four along with the right midfielder form a four-player line roughly at the level of the 6-yard box (B+C+D+H). In front of them, in the half-central area between the 6-yard box and the penalty area line, the two central midfielders position themselves (G+F). The left midfielder E tucks in from his original position and occupies the central area at the level of the penalty area line. The two strikers I and J stand staggered in front of the penalty area, with I covering the space behind while also being available as a passing option for a counterattack. J is positioned further forward toward the midfield line and primarily serves as a passing option for I, or should reach clearances or counter-initiating long balls. Variation: The exercise can also be performed with the players starting from their positions in the 4-4-2 and then taking their corner kick positions. However, this should only happen as a second step, after the players have developed a feel for their respective corner kick positions.
