Diagonal Ball Low/Half-High, Ball Reception, Cross + Finishing at Goal

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players

Setup

Set up a goal and cones as shown in the diagram. Players distribute evenly to the cones. The balls are at the starting cone.

Procedure

Player A plays a long diagonal ball into player B's run. Player B starts running the moment player A begins the kicking motion, receives the ball while running, and passes/crosses the ball into the striker's run. The striker shoots on goal with a direct volley.

Tip

- The diagonal opening ball should be played fast and low into the run. To achieve this, the ball must be played with the inside kick (half inside, half instep; ankle is extended). - The subsequent cross should ideally be played directly from the run but can also follow a first touch and carry. - After playing the opening ball, player A immediately moves to a central position, slightly offset toward the far post, at the level of the penalty area. - Pay attention to correct body posture when shooting: upper body over the ball; standing foot approx. 30-40 cm to the side of the ball, foot points in the direction of the shot; arms swing along; the arm closest to the shooting leg follows the leg's backswing, the other moves forward; the eyes are on the ball at the moment of the shot. - For the volley, the upper body should lean slightly forward and the ball should be struck at a low point (not too high). This gives the ball more power and greater accuracy. - If possible, ball reception should be done with one touch. - 1 small goal(s), 6 cones
