Double 4 vs 2

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19, Men's / Women's
  • Training Set Main point
  • Number of Players 6 - 9 players, 10-15 players, 16-22+ players

Setup

Pitch: Mark out a square of about 10 x 10 metres and divide it in the middle, so that two areas of 10 x 5 metres each are created. Behind each of the two outer sides stands a mini goal.

Equipment: Cones, 2 mini goals, bibs, balls.

Players: Two teams, the first with 7 players, the second with 4 players. With smaller groups 5 and 2 players per team respectively.

Procedure

  • In the upper area a 4 vs 2 is played for keeping possession.
  • As soon as every player of the team in possession has touched the ball or a set number of passes has been reached, the ball may be played into the lower area.
  • The passer or another player, agreed beforehand, moves up into the other area as well, so that a 4 vs 2 is created there too.
  • If the team with fewer players wins the ball, it tries to finish quickly on the nearest mini goal, while the other team immediately goes into counter-pressing.

Scoring: Every change of area earns the team in possession one point.

Note: Drill idea by Eddie Plickat.

Tip

  • Free players, especially the one standing opposite, should keep moving in order to keep the game dynamic and to create new passing options.
  • The defence should narrow the area near the ball so that many passing lines are closed and the player on the ball comes under pressure.
  • Quick ball circulation forces the opposition to run and create time. In doing so, pay attention to a firm ankle in order to take and pass on balls without losing time.
