Dribbling in the Diamond with Focus on Pass Timing, Ball Reception and Ball Control

  • Age U6 - U13, U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point
  • Number of Players 1 - 5 players, 6 - 9 players

Setup

Set up a cone cross according to the diagram. Players distribute themselves evenly at the four outer cones. Each player has a ball.

Procedure

Only one player dribbles with a ball to the opposite side at a time. At the yellow cone, he passes the ball into the run of the teammate at the red cone. This player controls the ball with one touch in the opposite direction and does the same with the player on the other side. When player A is at the yellow cone on the other side, player D can start.

Tip

- The players must develop running and handoff timing and keep looking up during the dribble. - Demand clean, close ball control (ball is not more than 50 cm from the foot) and fast dribbling. - Start the passing motion approx. 1.5 m before the yellow cone. Don't dribble too close to the yellow cone, but rather about two metres offset to the side. - When the passer goes into his passing motion, that is the start signal for the player expecting the ball. - If passing with the right inside of the foot, the pass must be played diagonally to the left and approx. 2 metres from the receiver. - In this exercise, pass sharpness, accuracy and timing are of the highest importance. The player expecting the ball must also start at the right moment and adjust his speed accordingly. - After controlling the ball, a 2-3 m burst of acceleration follows (separating from the defender), which transitions into speed dribbling. - As soon as the player controls the ball, the next two players start (red/grey - start timing). - The exercise can easily be practised with up to 20 players. - 8 cones
