Four small squares are set up so that together they form one large square. The players position themselves with balls as shown in the diagram at the top end between the cones.
Procedure
Player D starts with a speed dribble toward the centre of the field and plays a diagonal pass into the run of player E. E tries to dribble over the opposite end line. D sprints toward him and tries to prevent it. If D wins the ball, he may try to dribble over the opposite sideline himself. Afterward, all players line up on the opposite side.
Tip
- When the passer begins the passing motion, that is the start signal for the player expecting the ball. - In this drill, start timing and ball control are of utmost importance. The passing player must also continue running immediately after the pass. - Defensive challenge (winning the ball is the top priority! Do not just kick the ball away.) - Position the body so the opponent is pushed away from goal toward the outside. Close down the path to the end line. Stand sideways, offer one side; lure the opponent where you want him; then push the body in between to win the ball. - Stand on the balls of the feet, not on the whole foot. - Try to reduce the opponent's speed. (This buys time for the other defenders in a real game.) - Offensive challenge When possible, approach the opponent at maximum speed. At slower speeds, try to use a body feint. - 9 cones
