Drill KW35: 12 vs. 12 in four quarters of a half field

  • Age U14 - U19
  • Training Set Progression, Main point

Setup

Two teams of 12 are formed and distributed across four playing areas in a 3 vs. 3 each. They play against each other in one half of the field, which is divided into four squares as shown in the diagram. Two squares each get one ball.

Procedure

The teams' objective is to control the ball within their own ranks and regularly pass it to teammates in another quarter. The team in possession should prevent the other team from winning the ball through triangle formations and wide, deep passing. The other team must try to win the ball through aggressive tackling and organised pressing. Players may not leave their zone. Different difficulty levels: - Free play - 3 touches

Tip

- Triangles must be constantly formed to offer passing options. - Passing alternates between many short passes and long passes to switch the zone. - The teams should be in constant motion. Players try to continuously make themselves available and offer passing options to their teammates. - The team without possession tries to cleverly close passing lanes and spaces and constantly pressures the player on the ball and those around him. - The team waiting for the ball must get open and signal to the team in possession by calling out that they are available. - Getting stuck in a tight space should be avoided. Therefore, switches of play and through balls should be played regularly. - The passing targets should adopt an open body position (sideline at their back) so they can always see the next passing option. - This game format requires an enormous amount of running and tactical awareness and is characterised by constant communication and interplay between the quarters. - This game format develops short passing, playing in tight spaces, quick switches of play, and places high demands on the players. - 9 cones
