Exercise CW18.1: Play Pattern with Switch of Play I
AgeU6 - U13, U14 - U19
Training SetMain point
Number of Players10-15 players, 16-22+ players
Setup
On the end line of the field, set up a goal with a goalkeeper inside. 8 field players are positioned on the field as shown in the diagram. On the left/right wings, two players stand 10-15 metres apart. The two strikers take their positions 10 metres apart at the level of the penalty area line. The remaining players line up in pairs on the left and right behind players B and C. The balls are in the centre circle.
Procedure
The exercise begins with a pass from midfielder C to left back A, who lays it off directly to centre-back B. B passes the return ball diagonally to right back D. D passes diagonally into player E's run. E receives the ball, dribbles a few metres, and crosses into the box. Player A positions himself in the left half-space. Simultaneously with the pass to the wing, the four players B, C, H, and D start toward the goal into the back space. Shortly before E's cross, the two strikers I and J start toward the goal. Their running paths cross at the level of the 18-yard line. All players try to finish the cross.
Tip
- The strikers make crossing runs toward the near and far posts. - When crossing, it is important that the players start moving after the second-to-last pass and switch positions explosively at sprint speed just before the crosser's kicking motion. - The crossing players/attackers must not start too early. - Make sure the practised movement patterns lead to a fast, fluid overall movement. - The gaze should regularly be lifted from the ball (alternating between looking at the ball and looking forward). - The player expecting the pass makes a short counter-movement simultaneously with the passer's kicking motion. - The pass should be played into the running path of the player expecting the ball. - The passer must observe the running path of the player expecting the ball. - The diagonal balls should be played as inside kicks and require sharpness and precision. - 1 full-size goal(s)
